About Me

About me

Hi! Welcome to the PhD on FIRE blog. My name is Angela. I graduated in 2020 from the University of Michigan with a PhD in mechanical engineering, and now I’m a postdoc in California. My husband and I are proud dog parents to a 4 year old pug.

My research is on internal combustion engine design and optimization using computational and experimental methods. Hence the “fire” in my blog’s name. But it’s also about a different type of FIRE – the Financial Independence Retire Early movement.

I got interested in personal finance and investing during undergrad. I started budgeting with YNAB so I could live on my meager income from my part-time job on campus. Later got into investing when a mentor of mine, Ted, gifted me a book called “Bogleheads guide to investing”. On this blog, I’ll share tips on budgeting, saving, and investing, and my own personal finance journey.

I also want to discuss things related to graduate school and career development, and write about issues affecting graduate students, postdocs, and faculty. I’m starting my own career and want to document the process a bit. I’m hoping to share some of my friends’ journeys and tips as well, as we’ve all embarked on our own very diverse career paths. If there’s a topic you’d like me to discuss, don’t hesitate to contact me.
